Short description of ISSS 2009.

WHAT: Association “PRAVNIK” together with the partner organization Konrad Adenauer Stiftung- Rule of Law Program South East Europe will be offering an International Summer School Sarajevo entitled ” Transitional Justice in South-East Europe ” from 09- 22 August 2009.

WHERE: Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Accommodation is offered in the Franciscan Students’ Hostel in double bedded rooms. The Hostel is at 15 minute walking distance from the city center in safe and peaceful surroundings.

WHY: To empower future decision makers to work to establish the rule of law in transitional countries; To widen theoretical and practical skills of participants; To influence changes in transitional countries towards sustainable Rule of Law; To create Rule of Law Network of ISSS participants.

ELIGIBILITY: The program encourages applications from graduate students of law related disciplines, with a clear focus on law, (by the age of 35), including limited number of undergraduate students from South East Europe, Europe and the US.

PARTICIPATION: 200 € for accommodation, meals and working materials.
Students from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania and Serbia are eligible to apply for a participation fee reduction of 50 %.

Warsaw – A Mirror of European History and Contemporary Reality
Summer School “History Takes Place: European Memorial Sites”

Unlike any other European capital, Warsaw clearly exposes the major transition periods of the past two centuries. The city was greatly influenced by the illusionary splendour and social contrasts of the legendary Saxon period, the humiliation of the capital during the partitions of Poland, the great reform projects of the Polish enlightenment, and Warsaw’s role as an imperial Russian residence. Warsaw was never a provincial town.

The profile of Warsaw was forged by the erratic national movements of the 19th century, the peasant liberation movement, industrialization, the exciting emergence of the bourgeoisie, and the largest Jewish community in Europe. At the end of the century, Warsaw had become the fourth largest city of the Russian Empire. In 1918, it was again proclaimed the capital of Poland. The following decades were characterized by conflicts about the territorial order and the borders of the Polish nation state, inflation, artistic revival, the
“Golden Twenties”, the financial crisis, and state-controlled democracy, which, at the end of the 1930ies, was declared dispensable.

The second German occupation of the 20th century caused the deepest and bloodiest disruption in the history of Warsaw. In fact, the city had ceased to exist in 1945. Its citizens had died in war, were murdered or deported and its Jewish community had been systematically annihilated.

The reconstruction of Warsaw was both, a political myth, and at the same time an excellent performance of heritage management. It provided basis for the today’s capital, together with major demographic changes and the sometimes well-planned and sometimes chaotic expansion of the city into a socialist metropolis.

Since 2003 and at different central locations, the ZEIT-Stiftung has invited up to 20 young historians and scholars of cultural studies (primarily Ph.D. students) to attend academic seminars exploring the “Spectrum of Central and Eastern Europe” (H. v. Keyserlingk). These major sites and their regions are perceived as lieux de mémoire. Participants explore historical traces in local topographies, in architecture and monuments. The city itself is studied as a historical source – “History Takes Place”. The Summer Schools intend to internationalize and affiliate the historically-oriented humanities and cultural studies.. This year, Prof. Dr. Werner Benecke (European University Viadrina at Frankfurt/Oder) will serve as the academic director of the Summer School in Warsaw, which will also be sponsored by the Gerda Henkel Stiftung.

“Learn Romanian in Romania!” Romanian Language, Culture and Civilization Summer School, Brasov

Romanian Cultural Institute invites you for the 15th edition of the Romanian Language, Culture and Civilisation Courses

Brasov (Transylvania) July 12th – August 2nd, 2009.

The program contains intensive Romanian language classes, conferences on cultural topics and creative workshops: creative writing, 19th century Ball dancing and retro-costumes, Romanian gastronomy. Moreover, field trips are to be organized to the fortified Saxon fortresses Harman, Prejmer, Viscri, to the Bran castle, to the Rupea fortress, in the Old City of Brasov. These site visits will benefit from the informed comments of young sociologists historians and art historians.

The participation fee is 1000 Euros (registration, tuition, courses, workshops, trips, extra activities in the program and all-inclusive accommodation). Additional expenses (international and domestic return-tickets to Brasov, health insurances) are to be covered by the participants.

Several full and partial scholarships intended for the students of Romanian studies programs abroad, who are using the Romanian language for documentation, scientific research, translations, writing of academic papers or reviews on Romanian culture and civilization are available.

Grants are awarded on a highly competitive basis. Students can apply for 2 full grants (that cover the participation fee) or 4 partial (2 scholarships on 25% and 2 scholarships on 50% of the participation fee). The deadline for the grant applications is June 20th, 2009.
